Volunteerism

What is a volunteer? Somebody who works for free for somebody. Well, I do that a lot in our household. But I also volunteer a lot elsewhere. There is something inherently heart filling when doing something for someone else. Particularly when you can do it without them knowing it was you.

There are a lot of ways to volunteer: it doesn't have to be a carwash, or scrubbing floors, or cleaning up after someone. We need to people to talk to people, just talk, help us communicate our goals and accomplishments at events. Maybe hand out flyers. But we don't expect you to go without knowledge. We will have a meeting to train volunteers in several areas. If you are not getting our newsletter, let me know and I will add you to the list. That, in itself, does not obligate you for anything. We have a lot of fun doing what we do. Won't you join us?

Planning for the next few months

The Fund Raising Committee met recently to decide on some events that we will participate in and we have come up with four. While that in itself may not sound exciting, we are looking forward to developing those plans, including a Car Wash if the weather holds off on a weekend, and some indoor events planned by the City of Grand Prairie. All of our activities need extra help, so if you can even sit in a chair and talk, you would be welcome. We will probably have some short training sessions from time to time so everyone is more informed about our ministry.

We are always looking for extra hands to go with us to a local nursing home near Belt Line and Small Hill. We need people to just go and smile, walk around and talk to people, maybe sing, for sure have fun and bring some joy into the lives of those who may not have family or friends left. We know the residents are happy to see us.

Call if you would like to join us sometime.

Not Enough to Do in Your Life?

Need a purpose driven life? What do you enjoy doing most? LAHH, Inc. has several different areas that we are seeking volunteers to be active in.

One group goes to a nursing home on Saturdays to reach out and touch those who sometimes have no family or friends. A physical touch on their hand or shoulder, even a smile will often brighten the life of one of those seemingly forgotten people. You could make a difference.

If you have free time - or even time that you have to squeeze out - and you want to make a difference in the lives of others, let us know. Call the home office of Lanny Ford, President of Lend A Helping Hand, Inc. He, wife Nell or son Tim will be delighted to talk to you to see if this is where you would like to volunteer. 214-235-0255 e:mail: LendAHelpingHand2006@yahoo.com

There are other areas where help is needed, call to find out. We always need volunteers.

Being a Senior Also Means Having Fun

Lanny Ford, President, is not one to sit still and do nothing. He is an active member of the Grand Prairie Senior Center and enjoys spending time with friends that play pool . A few days ago, several of them entered a tournament against the seniors at the Irving Heritage Senior Center. It was a tough battle, but since there were no spectators, we can only speculate how bloody the fight was.

The Grand Prairie team has challenged the Irving team to meet in Grand Prairie on Friday, April 24, 11 am. The games will go on as long as there is anyone standing. Spectators are welcome and the fee is $5 for players and watchers. Lunch is included in the fee.

The Grand Prairie Senior Center is located at 925 Conover, 972-264-4975
